    SemLinker: automating big data integration for casual users

    A data integration approach combines data from different sources and builds a unified view for the users. Big data integration inherently is a complex task, and the existing approaches are either potentially limited or invariably rely on manual inputs and interposition from experts or skilled users. SemLinker, an ontology-based data integration system, is part of a metadata management framework for personal data lake (PDL), a personal store-everything architecture. PDL is for casual and unskilled users, therefore SemLinker adopts an automated data integration workflow to minimize manual input requirements. To support the flat architecture of a lake, SemLinker builds and maintains a schema metadata level without involving any physical transformation of data during integration, preserving the data in their native formats while, at the same time, allowing them to be queried and analyzed. Scalability, heterogeneity, and schema evolution are big data integration challenges that are addressed by SemLinker. Large and real-world datasets of substantial heterogeneities are used in evaluating SemLinker. The results demonstrate and confirm the integration efficiency and robustness of SemLinker, especially regarding its capability in the automatic handling of data heterogeneities and schema evolutions

    Exploiting extensible background knowledge for clustering-based automatic keyphrase extraction

    Keyphrases are single- or multi-word phrases that are used to describe the essential content of a document. Utilizing an external knowledge source such as WordNet is often used in keyphrase extraction methods to obtain relation information about terms and thus improves the result, but the drawback is that a sole knowledge source is often limited. This problem is identified as the coverage limitation problem. In this paper, we introduce SemCluster, a clustering-based unsupervised keyphrase extraction method that addresses the coverage limitation problem by using an extensible approach that integrates an internal ontology (i.e., WordNet) with other knowledge sources to gain a wider background knowledge. SemCluster is evaluated against three unsupervised methods, TextRank, ExpandRank, and KeyCluster, and under the F1-measure metric. The evaluation results demonstrate that SemCluster has better accuracy and computational efficiency and is more robust when dealing with documents from different domains

    CMQ - A lightweight, asynchronous high-performance messaging queue for the cloud

    In cloud computing environments guarantees, consistency mechanisms, (shared) state and transactions are frequently traded for robustness, scalability and performance. Based on this challenge we present CMQ, a UDP-based inherently asynchronous message queue to orchestrate messages, events and processes in the cloud. CMQ's inherently asynchronous design is shown to perform especially well in modern Layer 2 switches in data center networks, as well as in the presence of errors. CMQ's lightweight edge-to-edge design, which is somewhat similar to Unix Pipes, makes it very composable. By presenting our work, we hope to initiate discussion on how to implement lightweight messaging paradigms that are aligned with the overall architectures and goals of cloud computing

    Building capacity for learning communities: schools that work

    The purpose of this study was to identify the practices of sixteen successful schools that are building capacity for a learning community. The conceptualization was based upon three capacities (personal, interpersonal and organizational) necessary for community building. Researchers conducted interviews with staff, students, administrators and parents. Whole class interviews and participant observations and document analyses were also made. Findings indicated that the participating schools utilized a child-centered vision, that there was pedagogic focus to the work of the staff, that school-wide systems varied, and that leadership was a crucial. Further, the meta-cognitive acumen of the staff and the explicit and conscious use of language contributed to the growth of features associated with learning communitie

    The effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of cytisine versus varenicline for smoking cessation in an Australian population: a study protocol for a randomized controlled non-inferiority trial

    Smoking cessation medications are effective but often underutilised because of costs and side effects. Cytisine is a plant-based smoking cessation medication with over 50 years of use in Central and Eastern Europe. While cytisine has been found to be well-tolerated and more effective than nicotine replacement therapy, direct comparison with varenicline have not been conducted. This study evaluates the effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of cytisine compared with varenicline.Two arm, parallel group, randomised, non-inferiority trial, with allocation concealment and blinded outcome assessment.Australian population-based study.Adult daily smokers (N=1266) interested in quitting will be recruited through advertisements and Quitline telephone-based cessation support services.Eligible participants will be randomised (1:1 ratio) to receive either cytisine capsules (25-day supply) or varenicline tablets (12-week supply), prescribed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended dosing regimen. The medication will be mailed to each participant's nominated residential address. All participants will also be offered standard Quitline behavioural support (up to six 10-12 minute sessions).Assessments will be undertaken by telephone at baseline, 4- and 7-months post-randomisation. Participants will also be contacted twice (two and four weeks post-randomisation) to ascertain adverse events, treatment adherence and smoking status. The primary outcome will be self-reported 6-month continuous abstinence from smoking, verified by carbon monoxide at 7-month follow-up. We will also evaluate the relative safety and cost-effectiveness of cytisine compared with varenicline. Secondary outcomes will include self-reported continuous and 7-day point prevalence abstinence and cigarette consumption at each follow-up interview.If cytisine is as effective as varenicline, its lower cost and natural plant-based composition may make it an acceptable and affordable smoking cessation medication that could save millions of lives worldwide

    Views of addiction neuroscientists and clinicians on the clinical impact of a ‘Brain Disease Model of Addiction’

    Addiction is increasingly described as a "chronic and relapsing brain disease". The potential impact of the brain disease model on the treatment of addiction or addicted individuals' treatment behaviour remains uncertain. We conducted a qualitative study to examine: (i) the extent to which leading Australian addiction neuroscientists and clinicians accept the brain disease view of addiction; and (ii) their views on the likely impacts of this view on addicted individuals' beliefs and behaviour. Thirty-one Australian addiction neuroscientists and clinicians (10 females and 21 males; 16 with clinical experience and 15 with no clinical experience) took part in 1 h semi-structured interviews. Most addiction neuroscientists and clinicians did not uncritically support the use of brain disease model of addiction. Most were cautious about the potential for adverse impacts on individuals' recovery and motivation to enter treatment. While some recognised the possibility that the brain disease model of addiction may provide a rationale for addicted persons to seek treatment and motivate behaviour change, Australian addiction neuroscientist and clinicians do not assume that messages about "diseased brains" will always lead to increased treatment-seeking and reduced drug use. Research is needed on how neuroscience research could be used in ways that optimise positive outcomes for addicted persons

    The effect on cardiovascular risk factors of migration from rural to urban areas in Peru: PERU MIGRANT Study

    BACKGROUND: Mass-migration observed in Peru from the 1970s occurred because of the need to escape from politically motivated violence and work related reasons. The majority of the migrant population, mostly Andean peasants from the mountainous areas, tends to settle in clusters in certain parts of the capital and their rural environment could not be more different than the urban one. Because the key driver for migration was not the usual economic and work-related reasons, the selection effects whereby migrants differ from non-migrants are likely to be less prominent in Peru. Thus the Peruvian context offers a unique opportunity to test the effects of migration. METHODS/DESIGN: The PERU MIGRANT (PEru's Rural to Urban MIGRANTs) study was designed to investigate the magnitude of differences between rural-to-urban migrant and non-migrant groups in specific CVD risk factors. For this, three groups were selected: Rural, people who have always have lived in a rural environment; Rural-urban, people who migrated from rural to urban areas; and, Urban, people who have always lived in a urban environment. DISCUSSION: Overall response rate at enrolment was 73.2% and overall response rate at completion of the study was 61.6%. A rejection form was obtained in 282/323 people who refused to take part in the study (87.3%). Refusals did not differ by sex in rural and migrant groups, but 70% of refusals in the urban group were males. In terms of age, most refusals were observed in the oldest age-group (>60 years old) in all study groups. The final total sample size achieved was 98.9% of the target sample size (989/1000). Of these, 52.8% (522/989) were females. Final size of the rural, migrant and urban study groups were 201, 589 and 199 urban people, respectively. Migrant's average age at first migration and years lived in an urban environment were 14.4 years (IQR 10-17) and 32 years (IQR 25-39), respectively. This paper describes the PERU MIGRANT study design together with a critical analysis of the potential for bias and confounding in migrant studies, and strategies for reducing these problems. A discussion of the potential advantages provided by the case of migration in Peru to the field of migration and health is also presented
